Soil microbiology
Altitudinally and seasonally defined climatic conditions influence soil microbial communities and their metabolic activities to a significant extent. Investigations on the effect of altitude and season on soil microbial diversity and activity in forest soils include the characterization of soils with regard to physical and chemical soil properties, microbial activities involved in nutrient cycles and litter degradation and soil microbial community structures. The results should contribute to a better understanding of the impact of changed climate conditions on soil microorganisms in forest ecosystems.
