Human reproduction increasingly becomes a business. As such, it is a “business” dealing with hope and buying and selling “resources” directly derived from the human – most probably the female – body. Despite that, it is also subject to medical, ethical and legal considerations, often contradictory ones. What is medically possible is not necessarily ethically desirable and the forms of legal constraints regulating this area of conflict are quite diverse in different countries, even in Europe. Almost the same holds for stem cell research, which is also more and more a business of hope utilizing female body parts.

To develop an ethical position towards these businesses, we will investigate the issue of egg donation – for reproductive as well as scientific purposes – from various perspectives.

 

Prof. Itziar Alkorta Idiakez is Associated Professor for Private Law at the University of the Basque Country in Spain. She is a Researcher in the European Commission's Fifth and Sixth Research Framework Programmes and at the Hastings Centre in New York. She is also an advisor on biomedical law to the Carlos III National Institute of Health in Spain, the Basque government and other governmental agencies in Spain.
