PhD position available

at the Research Department for Limnology in Mondsee, Upper Austria (University of Innsbruck)
affiliated to the Interreg (Alpine Space) project “DiMark” (1^st September 2024- 31^th August 2027)

Alpine lakes face major challenges such as eutrophication through global change. In particular cyanobacteria and algae blooms the suitability of water bodies for drinking, recreational and economic purposes. Furthermore, algae blooms are usually associated with reduced biodiversity, lack of oxygen in the deep-water body as well as toxins posing a health risk. These developments can be better tracked and controlled through satellite data used for remote observation and improve collaboration between science and decision-makers. The aim of the project is to improve lake management using novel satellite-based methods to support adaptation to global change and disaster risk reduction. Within the project an online visualization tool with maps of the Alpine region to inspect and compare water status using key water quality indicators shall be developed.

The major tasks will include (i) the application of the satellite-based detection via the algae pigments (chlorophyll and phycobilin) for the remote observation of algae blooms in alpine lakes and (ii) comparing the satellite data with existing WFD monitoring data, e.g. for lakes in Upper Austria, Salzburg and Carinthia.

The PhD position will be financed for 3 years (30 hours per week) according to the University Collective Contract PhD salary (2684,10 € brutto per month). We are looking for a person holding a Master degree in Ecology/Limnology or related discipline with experience in imaging and processing of remote data for environmental observation. Parts of the working activities (e.g. linking of satellite data to water quality indices) will be performed with partner organisations of the project, i.e. in Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany or Slovenia. Further activities will comprise exploitation of metabarcoding data and its relation to remote sensing, report writing, preparation of scientific manuscripts, as well as communication with project partners and observers. The registration of the PhD thesis in Biology at the University of Innsbruck and the administration within the doctoral programme “Alpine Biology and Global Change” will be expected.

Gewässerbeprobung und technische Unterstützung bei wissenschaftlichen Projekten
Unterstützung Haustechnik
Sicherheitsvertrauensperson; Unterstützung bei Brandschutzaufgaben

Ihr Profil:

Umfassende und abgeschlossene technische Ausbildung (z. B. technisches Bachelorstudium, Fachmatura, BTA-Ausbildung, relevante Berufserfahrung)
Handwerkliche Kompetenz
Bereitschaft zur Ausbildung zum Bootsführer
EDV- und Englischkenntnisse von Vorteil
Selbständige Arbeitsweise
Kommunikative und teamorientierte Persönlichkeit

Für diese Position in Verwendungsgruppe IIIb ist ein kollektivvertragliches Mindestentgelt von brutto € 2.959 / Monat (14 mal)^* vorgesehen. Das Entgelt erhöht sich bei Vorliegen einschlägiger Berufserfahrung.
