Lecture 6

The Lumer-Phillips Theorem

Dear Participants,

last week we saw how to characterise generators of strongly continuous semigroups. Unfortunately, if you try to apply the Hille-Yosida theorem directly, in most cases you are facing unsolvable problems.

The main goal of this weeks lecture is to acquaint you with ideas how it is possible to overcome this difficulty. The keywords are dissipativity and perturbation. More on this topic in the lecture, which you can download from the link below.

We are also happy to inform you that the four lecturers had a meeting this week in Budapest. By this long planned journey the Innsbruck team successfully escaped from the iodine to land in the winter smog of a capital. We sincerely hope, however, that you do not notice anything from this environmental problems in this lecture.

Best wishes and good reading,
your virtual lecturers
