Research Interests
I am applying my alteration geochemistry and structural geology background to magmatic, hydrothermal and supergene ore deposit and mineral system studies. Primarily, I am interested in the formation of marine iron oxide and base + rare metal sulphide ores through the earth’s history and the metamorphic, hydrothermal and supergene processes, which modified these ores. In order to understand these complex mineral systems, I first establish an understanding of the geological and petrographic relationships, and then focus on specific analytical techniques, including whole rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry (laser ablation ICPMS, EMPA, μXRF), geochronology, stable, and/or radiogenic isotope.
My current projects include:
- Deposition of banded iron formations (BIF) and transformation to high-grade iron ore systems in the Archean Yilgarn Province (Australia), the Paleoproterozoic Hamersley Province (Australia), and the Neoproterozoic Urucum district (Brazil).
- Palaeozoic marine hydrothermal-sedimentary iron ore in Central Europe (PhD project)
- Austroalpine metamorphosed base-metal deposits in the Ötztal-Stubai Crystalline Mass (two MSc projects)
- The chemistry of iron oxide transformation processes in ore deposits (one MSc project)
- Application of Micro-XRF (i.e., microscale chemical analyses by x-ray fluorescence) in Earth, Archaeological, and Material Science research
