Rudolf Grimm’s research is focused on the fundamental aspects of ultracold quantum matter. The extreme states of matter are realized with atomic and molecular gases prepared in laser traps at temperatures in the nanokelvin range. In this ultracold world, quantum behavior dominates the interactions between the particles and the ensemble can form intriguing states of matter, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, fermionic superfluids, or other novel quantum phases. The key research theme of the group “Ultracold atoms and quantum gases” is to investigate fundamental questions of few- and many-body quantum physics by using well-controllable laboratory model systems.
