Martin Ringbauer's research is focused on understanding and harnessing quantum phenomena in trapped ion systems with the goal of building more efficient quantum technology. A particular interest in this context is the exploration of multi-level systems as qudits for quantum information processing. Trapped ions, as most other quantum systems naturally occupy a high-dimensional Hilbert space, which is largely ignored in the context of quantum computing. If this available potential is taken seriously as a resource for quantum computing, these devices become much more efficient and can be used more naturally to study other physical systems through quantum simulation. A current theme in this context is the study of particle physics problems through the quantum simulation of lattice gauge theories.
