Wilhelm Guggenberger's Research

Main areas of work and research

My research is focused on Christian social teaching. In addition to questions of general methodology and methods in biblically based social teaching and social ethics, my main interest lies in questions concerning the connection between worldviews that shape our lives (views of the world, humanity and God) and technical and economic structures. The work on these topics is based on the concept of dramatic theology (Raymund Schwager), which is being further developed at the Catholic Theological Faculty of Innsbruck, particularely within the framework of the research centre ‘Religion – Violence – Communication – World Order’. Contemporary global society is characterised by economic globalisation and the progressive dissolution of rule-based structures of order. This promotes direct and structural violence against humans and non-human nature. My academic work longs for the development and strengthening of a Christian theological critique of these developments and searches for a sustainable ethos in the service of peace, justice and responsibility for creation.
