Vortrag in englischer Sprache, Diskussion in deutscher Sprache
Since the modern concept of burnout was introduced in the 1970’s it attracted quite some attention, both from scientists as well as practitioners. Meanwhile over 100,000 publications on the subject appeared. This massive amount of information calls for separating the wheat (established facts) from the chaff (fiction and myths). In attempting to do so, six issues will be addressed: (1) the concept of burnout; (2) the assessment of burnout; (3) the prevalence of burnout; (4) the biological basis of burnout; (5) burnout in the work situation; (6) interventions to prevent and combat burnout. It is concluded that, in fact, ‘burnout’ is used in an ambiguous way: it means different things for different professionals (occupational physicians vs. psychologists). Also, despite abundant research not all-important questions on burnout are answered; for instance, about its prevalence. The address is closed with a future research agenda and a proposal for a moratorium on certain types of research.
