Weitere Informationen

Europe is currently experiencing significant tensions, with political and social debates increasingly focused on questions of belonging and recognition. Central to this discourse is the role of Muslims in reshaping European values and identities.

Renowned sociologist Nilüfer Göle, of Turkish origin and based in France, has extensively studied Islamic visibility, secularism, and intercultural controversies in European public spheres. In her ERC-funded research project (2008-2013), she demonstrated that the proximity of Islam within Europe leads to mutual interactions and transformations arising from conflicts and anxieties, opening up a new horizon for rethinking difference and pluralism in Europe.

In her lecture, Nilüfer Göle will explore how Muslims navigate and contribute to the shared spaces of Europe amidst conflicting values. Controversial values serve as the tool through which social life and practices are examined to understand the participation of Muslims in European public spaces and their roles and agency in reshaping national public spheres, as well as the evolving and contested processes of Europeanization.
