František Tůma (WU Wien)
František Tůma has degrees in (applied) linguistics and education. His current research focuses on social interaction in multilingual workplaces. Based on video recordings of naturally occurring interactions, he uses multimodal conversation analysis to explore interactions in workplace meetings, student (online) meetings, and counseling sessions. Before joining WU, František conducted research on classroom interaction and coordinated a teacher education program for English as a foreign language.
Many types of activities, such as classroom teaching, business meetings, and counseling, take place in and through social interaction. To help participants navigate the complexities of such interactions, courses and training modules informed by conversation analysis (CA) can be prepared. In this talk, I will share my research findings and experience from three settings: English language teacher education, courses for business and management students aimed at improving their intercultural competence and collaboration skills, and counseling workshops for prospective entrepreneurs. Special attention will be paid to specific techniques based on CA that can make relevant aspects of social interaction accessible to participants with limited or no background in CA. The talk will also address the participants' perceptions and underlying challenges in applying CA in these settings.
