Project goals

This project has evolved since its first inception and the attainment of the research grant. Though the general purpose remains the same, some of the goals have been slightly modified, and the final list of goals was fixed following the extensive literature review. The goal complex of the project finally comprises the following five goals.

Goal 1: Presenting a detailed overview of the status quo of the field of research from a historical as well as a thematic perspective, which is the most comprehensive and most detailed overview to date.

Goal 2: Developing an interdisciplinary research framework for TI-oriented language competence and its development based on insights from the TILLT literature review as well as the literature review of areas in other disciplines.

Goal 3: Providing an empirical basis for establishing guidelines for language learning and teaching for translation and interpreting purposes through:

  • an analysis of the status quo from the perspective of the different intervening agents (institutions, teachers and students),
  • interviews with practising translators and interpreters who have learned new languages while already working in the industry,
  • a survey on learning strategies, attitudes, and other aspects involving TI students and practising translators and interpreters.

Goal 4: Establishing research-informed guidelines for TILLT at universities and beyond based on the insights obtained, which can serve as an empirical foundation for decisions and actions at different levels, such as curriculum design, course design, lesson design, or self-study guidelines, and can be applied to different additional languages and competence levels.

Goal 5: Applying the knowledge gained in the previous stages in a coaching study with students in TI departments that helps them to develop translation-oriented language competence and learner autonomy.
