Facing the challenge of the global climate change the IP SUSTMONT aims to develop an intensive educational programme in environment-analyses, -modelling, -monitoring and stakeholder consultation with regard to sustainability of the alpine regions in Europe.
Based on research data about the global changes and sustainable development in European alpine regions (EU-Projects ECOMONT, SUSTALP, GLORIA, CARBOMONT, DIAMONT), the IP will show the actual methods of landscape modelling and remote sensing and visualize changes of land-use in GIS.
MAJOR TOPICS OF THE COURSE
IP SUSTMONT will study land management and conflicts from the Ebro Valley to the Pyrenees.
A conflict is the water from the Pyrenees used for irrigation purposes in the Ebro Valley.
Regional conflicts refer to tourism, energy management, traffic, nature conservation, and
Exponential growth of wind parks in mountain areas.
LECTURES ON MONITORING SCHEMES
Based on field visits a series of lectures on different schemes of environmental monitoring will be we given.
Regional and local scale monitoring:
Environmental Change Network (ECN) monitoring; Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) monitoring;
Large scale monitoring: Environmentally Sensitive Areas Programme; CS 2000 national countryside monitoring; Demonstration of Countryside Information; System software
WORKSHOP ON DECISION MAKING MODELLING
Participants are working in groups to identify and prioritise different types of environmental indicators.
Group session 1:
Identification of key environmental indicators for sustainable development
Group session 2: Select development plans for the Formigal Ski Resort
Group session 3: Select alternative management plans for Hecho Valley.
PROJECT TARGET GROUP
The target group includes students in the second stage of study of the departments of “Applied Ecology”, “Landscape Planning”, “Agriculture and Forestry Studies”, and “Environmental Engineering”. The Intensive Programme will allow elaborating the methodical basis for the analysis and assessment of status, endurance and potential development of rural areas. It means a contribution to the training of experts on the fields of “environmental planning and decision making” and “environmental monitoring” concentrating on sustainable development in rural areas. Successful participation of the course entitles students to a certificate with ECTS-credits which is acknowledged by all participating institutions.
TEACHING STAFF
The teaching staff will consist of experts from the IPE Jaca (ES), and the Universities of Innsbruck (AT), Aberdeen (UK), Alcalá de Henares (ES), Navarra (ES), Lleida (ES), Zaragoza (ES), Barcelona (ES).

WORKING LANGUAGE, REGISTRATION, ESTIMATE EXPENSES, PREPAYMENT
The teaching language for the intensive course will be English. The ultimate deadline for registration and prepayment is on 28th February 2010. Estimate contribution per student will be approx. EUR 300 (excluding flight transfer) for the stay in Spain. Remaining costs will be paid through an EU-grant.
