Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ's)
This is a short list of local Frequent Asked Questions in a user-friendly presentation.
- How can I check quota of my LinuX account?
- How can I login from outside of the University's domain IPs?
For security reasons, our LinuX cluster systems are only available from inside the University's domain IPs. If you want to access the systems from outside, you need to set up a VPN connection. See the ZID's instructions for setting up a VPN client for various operating systems. - How can I read the Science Scitation Index at my UNIX desktop?
- How can I use Wireless LAN (WLAN) at the Theoretical Physics Institute?
See WLAN-Zugang zum INNET at ZID Web pages. - My SeaMonkey, Mozilla or Firefox does not follow links to local files!
For security reasons, SeaMonkey does not allow web content to link to local files. An error like: Security Error: Content at url may not load or link to file:///something will appear in the javascript console. If you need to follow links to local paths it is recommended that you drag the link to the location bar and then drop it on the webpage. If you really don't like the security check and are willing to risk this site having access to local files on your system then store the following Mozilla user preferences fileuser.js
to your mozilla or firefox profile directory (where you find the fileprefs.js
) and restart your browser. - What are the Site-Names of the LinuX cluster and what are their specifications?
- What shall I do if Mathematica asks me for a password at start up?
- What shall I do if Mathematica fonts do not display well?
- What shall I do if the printer at the Workstation Cluster doesn't work?
- What shall I do if one of the print servers at the Workstation Cluster doesn't work?
There are two indepentently working print servers at the LinuX Cluster: obiwan (default print server!) and yeti. If one (mostly yeti) has a problem, make a slogin to the other and print from there. - Where is my LinuX home directory located at?
- Which LinuX boxes are running Samba?
Answer: obiwan & yeti.
