GNU/Linux-Pilotprojekt: Ablöse von Dualboot (Linux/Windows), Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Aufgrund von technischen Neuerungen und Sicherheitsstandards werden künftig keine Dual-Boot-Systeme mehr in Unterrichträumen eingerichtet und mit einer virtuellen GNU/Linux-Umgebung ersetzt. --- Due to technical advancements and security standards, dual-boot systems will no longer be set up in classrooms and will be replaced with a virtual GNU/Linux environment in the future.

An bestimmten Standorten wurden bisher Rechnerräume bzw. PCs mit einem Dualboot-System eingerichtet, an denen nach dem Einschalten sowohl Linux als auch Windows als Betriebssysteme zur Auswahl standen. Bedingt durch neue Sicherheitsrichtlinien und technische Inkompatibilitäten können diese Systeme künftig nicht mehr zielführend zentral verwaltet werden.

Aus diesem Grund werden ab dem Studienjahr 2023/24 folgende Änderungen für Linux-Nutzende im Rahmen eines Pilotprojektes bereitgestellt:

  • Am Standort Technik (UG Architekturgebäude) werden die PCs in den drei Rechnerräumen RR 14, RR 15, RR 26 kein Dualboot mehr zur Auswahl haben, d. h. nur mehr Windows In den anderen Unterrichtsräumen wird das Dualboot-System im kommenden Studienjahr aber noch weitergeführt.
  • Auf sämtlichen Rechnern der Unterrichtsräume (HS, SR, RR, …) an den Standorten Technik, Innrain (Inst. für Geographie) sowie am Standort SOWI (SR7) wird in Windows die virtuelle GNU/Linux-Umgebung „Windows Subsystem for Linux“ (WSL2) eingerichtet.
  • Nach diesem Testbetrieb soll diese GNU/Linux-Lösung ab dem Wintersemester 2024/25 in den Regelbetrieb übergehen.

Wir bitten die Linux-Nutzenden, WLS ausgiebig zu testen und ihre Erfahrungen rückzumelden!

Lehrende wird zusätzlich die Möglichkeit geboten, ihre Linux-Programme in der virtuellen Umgebung vorab zu testen, um evtl. Schwierigkeiten während der Lehrveranstaltung vorzubeugen.

Until now, certain locations have been equipped with computer rooms running on a dual-boot system, which allowed users to choose between Linux and Windows as their operating system upon start-up. However, due to new security policies and technical incompatibilities, these systems can no longer be effectively managed from a central location.

Therefore, the following changes will be made available for Linux users as part of a pilot project starting from the academic year 2023/24:

  • At the Technik location (bsmt of the “Architekturgebäude”), the PCs in the three computer rooms RR 14, RR 15, and RR 26, will no longer offer a dual-boot option and will only run Windows. However, the dual-boot system will continue to be offered in other classrooms throughout the upcoming academic year.
  • On all computers in the classrooms (HS, SR, RR, etc.) located at Technik, Innrain (Institute of Geography), and at the SOWI location in SR7, a virtual GNU/Linux environment called 'Windows Subsystem for Linux' (WSL2) will be set up within Windows.
  • After this testing period, this GNU/Linux solution will be implemented for regular use starting from the winter semester of 2024/25.

We ask Linux users to thoroughly test WSL and provide feedback on their experiences!

In addition, lecturers are provided with the option to test their Linux programs in the virtual environment beforehand, in order to prevent any potential issues during the course.
