1. Subject:
This workpackage deals with mechanical rock excavation in several applications. That includes tunnel boring machines (TBM), shaft boring system (SBS), and undercutting method.
- Fundamental understanding of mechanical fragmentation processes
- Fundamental understanding of wear processes
- Analysis of fracture initiation and propagation
- Numerical modeling of fragmentation process
- Devlopment of empirical models
- Probabalistic approaches for prediction models
- Hierarchical input parameters for prediction models
2. Methods
- Linear cutting tests (LCM)
- Rotary cutting tests
- High-speed imaging
- Fracture mapping
- Numerical Modeling (PFC - Particle Flow Code, Itasca)
3. Objectives:
- Development of a fundamental understanding of cutting process
- Modelling
- Verification of existing disc cutting models (Gehring, CSM)
- Establish structured approach for model input data
4. Approach
- Cutting process
- Perform linear cutting tests
- Monitor chip creation and velocities using high-speed imaging
- Obtain core samples for fracture mapping below cutting kerf
- Collect cuttings for size analysis
- Modelling
- Complex 3D-PFC model for cutting process
- Validate numerical model
- Derive simple approximation
- Verification of existing disc cutting models (Gehring, CSM)
- Check existing and new cutting data against Gehring's and CSM's models
- Compare mathematical approaches and simply models
- Model input data
- Develop hierarchy of input data reflecting knowledge at different project stages
- Gather emipircal data to substitute actual input by assumptions
- Verify model with field data
