Aquinas-Lecture 2020 – Prof. Dr. Fáinche Ryan (Dublin): „The Complexity of Truth-telling: Augustine, Aquinas, and some contemporary considerations“ [Einladung]

In the light of contemporary discussion of fake news it seems timely to return to Aquinas’s discussion of the virtue of veracitas (truth-telling) and its opposing vice of mendacio (lying). In the background of the discussion is Augustine’s treatment of lying in his De Mendacio (provoked by the  controversy with Jerome over Galatians 2:4) as well as in his Contra Mendacium. Some contemporary writers such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Hannah Arendt have offered impressive reflections on the complexity of truth-telling.  The paper will argue for the contemporary relevance of Aquinas’ treatment of veracitas and given its status as an annexed virtue to justice its relevance to the contemporary discussion of fakenews.  

Die irische Philosophin Fáinche Ryan wird den Festvortrag zur mittlerweile traditionellen Aquinas-Lecture halten. Sie ist Direktorin des Loyola-Instituts am renommierten Trinity College Dublin. Fáinche Ryan ist führende Kennerin des Werks des Aquinaten und kann gleichermaßen als Wortführerin einer gesellschaftlich engagierten Philosophie und Theologie gelten, mit besonderem Augenmerk auch auf „gender-sensitivity“. Eines ihrer Hauptanliegen in Forschung und Lehre ist es, die Rolle der Kirche in einer pluralen Gesellschaft zu bedenken. Damit trifft sie wesentliche Anliegen des Instituts für Christliche Philosophie und des Institutum Philosophicum Oenipontanum: fundierte Wissenschaft in den besten Traditionen und zeitgemäßes Agieren im Feld von Scientific Community und Gesellschaft.
