Sensemaking and Resistance of Workers in the Gig Economy
A Research Project
Study participants wanted (compensated)
Background
The Institute of Information Systems, Production Economics and Logistics at the university of Innsbruck is currently conducting a study, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), which investigates the reactions and behaviors of gig economy workers towards algorithmic management employed by platforms.
Under the direction of Univ. Prof. Dr. Ulrich Remus one part of the study focuses on how gig workers perceive and make sense of algorithmic management practices, which are often highly opaque and complex. In the other part of the study a Q-methodology mixed-method approach is applied with the goal to identify resistance types of gig workers, explore their characteristics and similarities, and therefore give a voice to the subject of resistance.

Invitation to participate in the study
If you are currently working for a food-delivery platform (e.g. DoorDash, UbearEATS, Foodora, Grubhub) or another gig economy platform we invite you to participate in our study. Your contribution would be valuable to our research and can help bring better understanding and transparency to the challenges and impacts of algorithmic management in the gig economy.
If you would like to participate in this study, you will:
- Participate in an online interview where you can share your experiences and perspectives (about 30-45 min).
- As well as complete an online Q-Sort procedure where you will sort a series of statements reflecting your feelings, views and reactions to algorithmic management (15-20 min).
Your participation is completely voluntary and you may withdraw from the study at any time without consequence. We assure you that your responses and information will be kept strictly confidential and used only for research purposes. You will not be required to disclose any personally identifiable information and your responses will be anonymized.
As a small thank you for your valuable time and participation, we are offering you a 20$ Amazon gift card as compensation for your efforts.
