Scientific writing workshop 2

Writing the first scientific manuscript can be a major challenge for PhD students. The experimental or theoretical results have to be presented with sound and well-made figures and with structured text in a language that is appropriate for the field and the targeted Journal.

The DK-ALM PhD students were trained by Dr. Ivan Yudushkin from Vienna in a two-days workshop on scientific writing. 27 students in two groups trained their writing skills on May 3rd and 4th 2018 and have made a further big step in their scientific education.

Feedback from our DK-ALM student Malcolm Simpson

"Doing great science is only part of the challenge and barely worth its salt if results are not communicated to the greater scientific community and the public at large. We have all heard of the importance to "publish, publish, publish" and are aware of the potential pitfalls of not achieving this in a timely and engaging manner. However, how do we commence the writing process? How is the purpose of the text we are intending to produce taken into account and for whom are we writing? Do we need to consider specific styles, language structures or grammar? All these questions and more were answered thoroughly and enjoyably during the Scientific Writing course organised by the FWF Doctoral Programme Atoms, Light and Molecules (DK-ALM). Our trainer, Dr. Ivan Yudushkin of the Max F. Perutz Laboratories, Vienna presented an insightful and captivating programme in the art of communicating science and left the attendees with the skills required to produce well written interesting articles of their own."
